Bulova Launches First Ladies Archive Series Timepiece
This watch celebrates the 1957 Bulova American Girl “K,” seen in the hit TV series, The Queen’s Gambit.
Bulova reimagines its iconic Bulova American Girl “K” watch as the first ladies’ timepiece within the brand’s Archive Series collection. Joseph Bulova, who founded the brand as a jewelry store on Maiden Lane in New York City, is believed to have launched the first ladies’ watch in 1917 and the first full line of women’s watches, many with diamond accents, in 1924.
The interest and mystique around Bulova American Girl watches was renewed recently when they were prominently featured in two award-winning television series, The Queen’s Gambit and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Bulova American Girl “K” timepiece is featured throughout the breakout TV series, The Queen’s Gambit – gifted to and worn by the main character, Beth Harmon – a young female chess prodigy. The watch is a graduation gift to her from her adoptive mother and is cherished by Beth.
Limited to 2,000 numbered pieces worldwide and presented in an elegant red keepsake case with white satin lining, the new Bulova American Girl “K” watch is available at retail for $595. According to a company statement, Bulova has used the Bulova American Girl name often throughout its history and the models advertised were popularly seen on the 1950’s Frank Sinatra Show television program, also known as Bulova Watch Time because of Bulova’s sponsorship. The first record of use was in 1933 and onward in 1937-1938, 1947, 1952, 1954, and 1957-1960. Their delicate feminine design personified elegance, and they were not only worn as timepieces, but as beautiful pieces of jewelry, the company says.
As Bulova travels back in time to unlock some of its most memorable moments in history through its Archive Series, the brand strikes a delicate balance of femininity and powerful charm with the new Bulova American Girl “K” timepiece, the company reports.
Inspired by the original ladies’ design from 1957, the newly reissued timepiece features a gold-tone stainless steel, petite 17 by 29 mm, tonneau-shaped case and white dial finished with a double-domed sapphire crystal. A faceted case and bracelet make for an elegant and detailed design, including spring closing bangle bars for a comfortable fit and jewelry tongue-in-groove clasps complete with a 60 mm safety chain extender to ensure a secure fit for small to large wrists. Powered by a 4 ¾ ligne Miyota 5R21 2H quartz movement, the watch is said to be water resistant to 30 meters.
