The premise of Wichita, KS-based Appreciation at Work is simple: appreciation is a pillar of employee engagement and performance and achieves the most impact when it is expressed authentically and tailored to each person’s preferred language of appreciation.
The process is based on the book, 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, by Dr. Paul White and Dr. Gary Chapman, which has sold over 400,000 copies in over two dozen languages.
The five languages are: words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, tangible gifts, and physical touch. Appreciation at Work has developed the Motivating By Appreciation assessment to help employees determine their preferred form of appreciation.
According to White, “Younger employees have distinct values and expectations regarding appreciation at work, which necessitates a shift in how organizations communicate recognition. The updated Young Adult Version of the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory aims to resonate with this demographic by incorporating their feedback and preferences.”
The Young Adult Version of the MBA Inventory is designed specifically for employees in their late teens through late twenties. In addition to incorporating the language used by the younger generation, some of the differences addressed by the new version address the following factors:
- Peer recognition is key: Younger professionals prioritize appreciation from peers over supervisors, reflecting a focus on relationships with colleagues of similar age.
- Modern communication channels: The updated inventory utilizes culturally relevant language and communication methods, such as messaging apps and voice notes, instead of traditional email requests for thanks.
- Work-life balance emphasis: There is a stronger focus on flexibility and balance in the workplace, with actions like allowing compensatory time off after long hours being highlighted as meaningful.
