Authentic Experiences: Jockey Hollow, NJ

True to the commitment of the Enterprise Engagement Alliance’s RRN media to promote authentic, off-the-beaten path destinations, here’s another suggestion near NYC for individuals or retreat meetings featured on our Shorescapes.net travel site.

Relatively few New Yorkers even know about one of the most beautiful national monuments dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary war, rivaling Valley Forge in quiet grandeur.

It’s an easy escape from New York by car or train. Just about 30 miles from NYC near Morristown, N.J., Jockey Hollow is the name of the location of Morristown National Historic Park--a 1,700 stunning monument to soldiers who camped here in the harsh winter of 1779-1780, after having fled New York in defeat.

Here, while walking on the old roads in a forest that feels so untouched it’s almost primeval (and said to be haunted), you can see the remains (in winter) of the foundations of their huts on a hillside and a reconstruction of a few of them not far from another special spot.

A short walk away from the huts, you can stand on a now empty field that was the scene of one of George Washington’s many inspirational acts of leadership applicable to our times as well.

About a dozen soldiers stood on the scaffolds one cold morning, before the ragged troops and guards standing attention, waiting to be executed for one of the many frequent acts of mutiny that winter Washington was doing everything he could to stop.

Just as the men were about to be executed, Washington called a halt to the ceremony.

He pardoned all but one man, the ringleader.

This act of clemency is said to have had a powerful effect on the troops. Was it his way of expressing empathy for the hardships all the soldiers and support people were experiencing?

Morristown has lots of restaurants, many chain hotels, and two more traditional hotels nearby, The Madison Hotel and The Bernards Inn.
